Given that the maximum level of 4% residual sugar was a new approach for maintaining the integrity of beer, it generated considerable discussions among stakeholders. Analyses were conducted on specific styles of beer that were identified through the consultation as potentially exceeding the limit. based on domestic and imported product testing, most styles of beer have a percentage by weight of residual sugars in the final product of less than 4%.
The CFIA consulted targeted stakeholders and determined that there was sufficient support to proceed with establishing a limit in residual sugars and concluded that this requirement achieves its purpose of characterizing beer.
